Avila is California's safest beach.

"This recreational center is nestled in a landlocked cove protected from the open Pacific by a range of colorful hills and was, at one time, a famous rendezvous for pirates at the time of their powerful hold on the Pacific."
Well there you have it folks. The Avila Beach Civic Association is claiming pirates were hanging out in Avila Beach.
The world'd largest steam oil tanker, the S. S. Montebello. The ship is taking on oil at the Union Oil pier, or Avila's middle pier in 1941. On the back of this photo is the caption. "It left at 2 am north and was torpedoed off Piedras Blancas at 5:55 am." The I-21, a Imperial Japanese submarine, had fired two torpedoes. One torpedo struck and sunk the ship. All the crew were rescued unharmed.
